If you have been diagnosed with an eye condition, vision problems, or eye disease, you likely already know the importance of protecting your sight and eye health in partnership with your qualified optometrist. With regular eye exams and capable treatment, many previously debilitating eye problems are now quite manageable.

Once you receive a diagnosis from your Total Vision eye doctor, they will work with you to develop a treatment plan that fits your goals and your lifestyle. This is where you can receive the best eye care. Read on to learn more about common eye conditions and their treatments.

Types of Eye Diseases

Refractive Errors

Refractive errors are the most common cause of blurred vision and occur when the shape of the eye or cornea prevents light from entering the eye correctly.

Nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism are often diagnosed in childhood and progress into adulthood. Presbyopia is the development of nearsightedness as the patient ages and usually develops after 40.

Most refractive errors can be effectively treated with glasses, contact lenses or, in some cases, with laser eye surgery. To learn more about treatment options for your vision problems, visit your Total Vision optometrist for a comprehensive eye exam.

  • Cataracts are a cloudy growth on the lens of the eye that cause blurred vision and can progress to cause blindness if left untreated.
  • If your Total Vision eye doctor diagnoses you with cataracts, they will discuss treatment options for your specific case on an ongoing basis. Treatments they recommend may include eye drops, glasses, and eventually surgery to remove the cataract(s).

  • Strabismus is an eye condition that causes the eyes to be out of alignment. Amblyopia, or lazy eye, is a condition wherein one eye becomes more ‘dominant’ than the other. Both are often diagnosed in childhood and are correctable, but can cause vision loss without appropriate treatment.
  • Common treatments employed by Total Vision optometrists for strabismus and amblyopia include eye exercises, eye patches, glasses, vision therapy, and surgery.

Age-Related Macular Degeneration

  • A leading cause of vision loss in patients 50 or older, age-related macular degeneration progressively damages your central vision. While this eye disease cannot be cured, successful treatments to preserve your vision may include laser surgery, dietary changes, injections, and pharmaceuticals.

Eye Infections

  • Eye infections can be uncomfortable and unsightly, but are usually very treatable under the care of your optometrist. Effective treatments often include antibiotics or steroids prescribed by your eye doctor.

  • Glaucoma, very simply, is the buildup of excessive pressure in the eye, which can damage the optic nerve, causing permanent vision loss without appropriate treatment. Early diagnosis can make a big difference in a patient’s prognosis, another powerful argument for keeping up with your regular eye exams at Total Vision!
  • When glaucoma is first detected, your optometrist will prescribe medications in order to slow or even stop the disease’s progression and maintain your sight.

Diabetic Retinopathy

  • Diabetic retinopathy is a risk for diabetes patients. Caused by damaged blood vessels and/or bleeding in the back of the eye, it can lead to vision loss and blindness without treatment.
  • Prevention is always preferable, and you can help protect yourself from diabetic retinopathy with regular eye exams and careful management of your diabetes. If you are diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy, your Total Vision optometrist will discuss treatment options including medications, laser surgery, or vitrectomy surgery.
