You’ve likely already seen the life-changing effects of Lasik surgery on a friend or family member - with more than 700,000 Lasik surgeries performed every year, it is one of the most popular elective surgeries. There’s no denying that the prospect of leaving glasses and contact lenses behind forever is very appealing! But is Lasik surgery the right treatment option for you?

To get the facts about Lasik surgery and discover if you are an appropriate candidate, schedule a consultation.

How Does Lasik Surgery Work?

Lasik surgery can be an effective treatment for many refractive errors, vision problems caused by the shape of the eye or cornea, the lens at the front of the eye. If you have nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism, Lasik surgery can be an option.

Lasik surgery itself lasts only about 15 minutes. Your surgeon will create a flap in the cornea and then use a laser to correct the corneal shape with the aim of lastingly correcting your refractive error. It can take about 3-6 months for your vision to fully stabilize after Lasik, but you can resume many normal activities prior to this.

What Should I Expect From My Lasik Consultation?

Eye Tests & Screenings

Before you go “under the laser”, your first step toward lasting clear, crisp vision is a Lasik consultation. During your Lasik consultation, your Optique Del Mar eye doctor will perform a variety of tests, screenings, and examinations to ensure that no eye diseases or conditions that might preclude surgery are present. Because pupil dilation is necessary for your examination, you may wish to have someone else drive you home afterwards.

Your eye doctor will also evaluate your current prescription to ensure there have been no major recent changes, a requirement of Lasik surgery. These screenings and examinations will be fairly similar to your annual comprehensive eye exam, so many tests may already be familiar to you.

Measurements & Considerations

Your eye doctor will also take rigorous measurements of your eyes and corneas for later use by your surgeon. Because contact lenses can slightly change the shape of your eyes, you will be asked not to wear them for about two weeks prior to your consultation. This is part of ensuring you get the best results with laser eye surgery.

If you are a candidate for Lasik surgery, your eye doctor will also spend time to ensure you understand how the surgery works and what to expect from the recovery period. Perhaps most importantly, your eye doctor will discuss the risks and benefits of Lasik surgery, take time to understand your questions and goals, and help you decide if Lasik surgery is the right option for you.
