The gift of sight is precious, and protecting your vision and eye health is the chief concern of the entire team at Optique Del Mar. Many eye conditions and diseases are entirely treatable, but require early detection and diagnosis for best results. As part of the Total Vision eye care network, your Optique Del Mar eye doctor uses the latest in diagnostic technology and tools to identify and treat a wide variety of conditions. Don’t wait for symptoms to start; be vigilant and forward about your eyes with regular visits to your friendly and experienced Total Vision optometrist.

Types of Diseases

Below are some of the common eye conditions we treat at Total Vision and what our optometrists do to treat such conditions.

Glaucoma

Caused by high pressure within the eye (intraocular pressure), glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that can damage the optic nerve essential to your vision. Glaucoma is most common among patients over 60, but severe nearsightedness, diabetes, high blood pressure, and other factors can increase risk at any age.

Regular glaucoma screenings at your annual eye exam help ensure glaucoma is caught early when it is most treatable. Without treatment, glaucoma can cause blindness. Treatments for diagnosed glaucoma or those at high risk can include medications, laser treatments, and surgery.

Diabetic Retinopathy

This complication of diabetes is caused by damage to and/or leaking of the blood vessels at the back of the eye. Diabetic retinopathy may be quite advanced by the time noticeable symptoms emerge. Your best defense is careful maintenance of your diabetes along with the regular care of a qualified optometrist. Treatments for diabetic retinopathy can include laser treatments, vitrectomy surgery, and injections.

Keratoconus

Marked by progressive thinning and bulging of the cornea, keratoconus can result in blurred vision, double vision, light sensitivity, and serious vision loss. With diagnosis in the early stages of keratoconus, treatments may be as simple as contact lenses or glasses. However, this chronic disease may need more aggressive intervention if it continues to advance. At more advanced stages, you and your optometrist may consider corneal transplant surgery.

Dry Eye Syndrome

While most of us experience a dry eye sensation from time to time, chronically dry eyes may mean you suffer from dry eye syndrome. After diagnosis of this syndrome by your optometrist, treatments can range from the use of artificial tears to minor surgery. Your Optique Del Mar optometrist will identify the causes of your dry eyes and develop an eye care plan tailored to your symptoms and needs.

Retinal Detachment

The retina is a thin layer of tissue at the back of the eye which is essential to your vision. While not painful, symptoms of a retinal detachment can include the sudden appearance of floaters, flashes of light, and reducing peripheral vision. A full retinal detachment is an emergency situation which requires immediate optometric care to save your sight.

At your comprehensive eye exams, your Optique Del Mar optometrist checks for signs of retinal damage at the earliest stage, when it is most correctable. A fully detached retina may require emergency surgery as soon as possible. However, retinal tears and more minor retinal damage can be corrected by your optometrist with a laser treatment.
